Projections Guide

Projections are the ability layer that turns Vapor World’s deflection combat into a buildcraft playground. You discover unique enemies and items, learn Projections, and combine them to parry, blind, or otherwise break Traumas more cleanly. This guide explains how to think about Projections during Early Access.

What Projections are

Developer copy describes Projections as skills used in combos that support parries or blinds so you can defeat enemies more easily. Narrative materials also frame dream entities and cores as the path to recalling memories and growing power. In practical terms: each Projection is a tool with a timing, a risk, and a best room type.

Do not collect Projections passively. After every unlock, spend five minutes in a safe room testing startup frames, recovery, and whether the tool wants you close or far.

Building a shortlist

Early Access will not ship every late-game option. Prioritize:

  • Consistency tools that forgive imperfect parry timing
  • Crowd tools for multi-Trauma rooms
  • Vertical or traversal assists if a path is gated
  • One high-damage punish for Seed phase transitions

Write your shortlist into the EA checklist and compare community-facing rankings on the tier list. Then assemble a coherent set with best builds.

Combo thinking

A Projection is rarely a full replacement for how to parry. The strong pattern is: deflect to create a break, spend a Projection to extend the stun or blind, extract, exit. Greedy Projection spam without a deflection foundation fails when stamina, cooldowns, or recovery frames punish you.

Exploration linkage

Some Projections appear behind ladders, breakable barriers, or movable objects. The Early Access walkthrough flags likely search moments without listing every secret. If stuck, revisit rooms after a new ability unlock—metroidvania logic applies even inside a souls-like frame.

Loadout discipline

Carry a primary combat Projection and a utility Projection. Swapping every death teaches nothing. Keep a loadout for at least two full rooms, then adjust. Note failures: died to groups → add blind/crowd; died to single Seed strings → add parry extender; died to platforming → add mobility.

Synergy with stealth

Blind and distraction tools elevate stealth routes. If you prefer ambush play, bias your unlock order toward those tools even if raw damage ranks lower on a tier chart.

Tracking changes

Projection balance will move during Early Access. When patch notes mention combat retunes, re-test your favorites and update personal rankings. Cross-check the roadmap for content drops that add new abilities.

New players should finish Getting Started first. Boss hunters should open the Seed and Trauma boss guide. Story-focused readers can connect Projection lore to the story overview. Hardware or input issues belong on controls and system requirements.

Projections are how the dream teaches you new verbs. Treat each unlock as a curriculum step, not a collectible checkbox, and Early Access combat opens up.

Naming and localization

Interface language may show Korean or English labels first during Early Access. Focus on effect descriptions: extend, blind, mobility, burst. Update your notes when translations expand toward full release languages listed on the roadmap.

Training room habits

After each unlock, fight the same Trauma pack three times: once without the Projection, once with it on cooldown greed, once with it reserved for breaks only. The third pattern usually wins Seeds.

Backtracking map marks

When a Projection clearly interacts with breakables or gaps, mark earlier rooms on your EA checklist. Metroidvania value dies if you never return.

Failure audit

If a Projection keeps getting you killed, it is not “high skill”—it is wrong for your timing. Swap it. Ego loadouts are how beautiful nightmares become unpaid overtime.
